K.I. SAWYER - SOMEPLACE SPECIAL

Page Two

Our Former Sawyer homes
In 1963/64 we lived on 313 Dart Street. The only obvious change we noticed on the Dart Street units when we visited in 2002 was the addition of garages. We didn't have that luxury when we lived there. When I peered through the basement window of our old unit I spotted the center support pole and it instantly brought back a memory. I received my first bicycle on Christmas day in 1963 and during that winter I taught myself to ride my new bike by pedaling many miles around and around that pole in the basement.

In 1964 the base completed a new 200 unit housing addition that included Cougar, Crusader, Banshee, Fury, Savage, and Vigilante Street. That same year my father made TSgt in December and we were offered a brand new duplex on 113 Savage Street. We lived there until we left KI Sawyer in 1971. The landscaping in this area is not as pretty as it was and the driveways are worn however after 30+ years the duplexes have changed very little. The outside of our unit on Savage was bricked in the front with yellow siding on the garage and second story when we lived there. Now the brick is gone (or covered) and the duplex is fully sided in gray. I also noticed the heating fuel is now natural gas. We had an oil-burning heating system when we lived there. The major change we did spot immediately was the missing pine trees. All the beautiful trees behind the housing units bordering the forest are gone! We found out later that the tree line was cutback to reduce insurance costs.

Dart & Savage Street Photos between 1963 -1971

Unfortunately we do not have many photos of the housing area when we lived at KI Sawyer between 1963 and 1971. The photos may be few however I have many fond memories growing up here. I loved riding my bike, camping out, exploring the woods, and fishing the lakes during the pleasant summer months. Even with the long and often harsh winters there were still plenty of fun things to do outside as a kid. The Sawyer area is truly a winter wonderland, especially if you enjoyed snow sports. There were many surrounding hills perfect for winter tobogganing. Snowball fights and playing ?king of the snow bank? were common. Skiing & ice-skating were popular and snowmobiling really took off as a recreational sport in the 60?s.
