K.I. SAWYER - SOMEPLACE SPECIAL

Page Eight

Moments in Time

While living at KI Sawyer between 1963 and 1971 many historical things happened. We were at KI Sawyer when President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. We were there when Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated in 1968. The escalating Vietnam War dominated the news while we watched the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. I also recalled being glued to the television for hours watching Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking the moon in July 1969. On this page I briefly highlight a couple of proud moments of personal history while at KI Sawyer.

62nd FIS 1965 William Tell World Champions!

My father was assigned to the 62nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron while at KI Sawyer. In 1965 he was selected to be a member of the ground support team to represent the 62nd FIS at the United States Air Forces William Tell worldwide weapons meet held at Tyndall AFB, Florida. William Tell 1965 was the largest in history with 16 teams and four categories. Not only did KI Sawyer?s 62nd FIS win the prestigious Richard Bong Trophy they also brought home 7 other 1st place trophies!

My Mother Volunteers

While at KI Sawyer AFB my mother stayed busy raising my sister and myself. She also did volunteer work. She was a Cub Scouts Den mother, bowling league secretary, and put in many hours as a Family Services Volunteer. We were very proud when my mother was chosen as Family Services Volunteer of the Year for 1966. Family Services is a volunteer organization that operates under the concept that the Air Force "takes care of its own". It is designed to assist families of Air Force in emergencies and welcoming & helping new arrivals.
