Nice trip down memory lane. Thank you for putting the time and effort into this website. 1985-88 seems like such a long time ago. KIS was my first duty station from Tech School. I was a heavy equip mechanic working in the 410 Tra**quadron. I lived in Gwinn for a little while before getting into base housing. 356 Commando. I loved the winters and the guys I worked with. I remember going to ShopKo in Marquette because it was all we could afford. My first son was born at the base hospital and I remember the only thing I paid for was his mother's meals. Wow!! What a step back this has been. Again... thanks for the website!!

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer from January, 1969 thru December, 1971. I worked on the AN/ASG-21 Defensive Fire Control System on the B-52H... 410th Avionics Maintenance Squadron. I LOVED the U.P. in spite of the brutal winters. I've been back there twice since I left in '71 and hope to visit again one day. I have TONS of old 35mm slides that I took during my tour there. I plan to digitize them all very soon and would be most happy to share them with you. Best Regards, Randy Miller

Really enjoyed browsing the site! I was born at Sawyer in September of 1967, and my dad was discharged and we moved (back) to Minneapolis three weeks later. I've only been to Sawyer a couple times since, and not since it closed.

I have visited your site a few times now and everytime my memories seem to come in a little clearer! My Dad was stationed there 65-67. we lived at 107 Cougar St.,of course it really was not a street, it was a circle. The common denominator here, appears to be that everyone really enjoyed living there. For me this was my favorite home of all the places we were stationed. Today you hear children chanting the mantra, I am bored! Not at Sawyer, not in the Sixties! We arrived at Sawyer during the winter, and one of the first sights that I saw was the flight line packed With those beautiful B-52s and KC-135s. Winters there were so much fun, with snowball fights, sledding, and King of the snow hill, how could a kid be bored? And those long summer days? We used to tramp the woods hours each day.One of our favorite hangouts was Martins lake, where we fished for blugill and perch. The mosquitoes, however were not fun,and reminded us of the B-52. And what about that great mode of childhood travel, our bicycles? We used to ride them everywhere. Banshee hill was alot of fun on a bike. The people though were what made all of the other things so nice. Does anyone remember 6th grade teacher Mr. Nesbitt? Some of kids I knew had names like Marty Cambell, Wade Norvell,Paul Castro,Dawn Pickett,Jennifer Young, and Brenda Skutnik, Whose older brother Lenny is a real hero, having saved aflight attendant on the the 727 that went down in the Potomac. The men and women who served in SAC during those days too, were heroes who protected us when we were too young to care,or to know the cost of freedom. Thank you for helping me remembering those wonderful days at K.I.SAwyer
