God what a great site. Another Air Force Brat here. We lived off the base in a Trailer Park. I remember the one room school I attended. And I remember gym class at the high school and running around the lower gym up the stairs and around the upper lever. We were stationed there from 1962 to 1967 when my dad retired. Does any one remember Clyde Searfoss he was an Air Policeman on the flight line. We are also looking for James Stuck if any one knows of him please contact me. Terri soave

I spent a couple of years in the late 60's after returning from Vietnam at K.I.flying H model B-52's. It was a jolt coming from the tropics to the snow country, but being from Montana originally I adjusted pretty quickly. I spent about half of my life on Alert, either ground or airborne, so I missed a great deal of my family of four daughters growing up, but to me that is the only "downer" I can think of when I think of K.I. I had the privilege of being a charter member of our snow mobile club. It was a great club. Even had competitions which included kids from Canada. All four of my daughters competed. I have nothing but fond memories of my time at K.I. I have to admit operating in the cold and the snow was challenging, however....

I was stationed there from Jan 1993 - Apr 1994 and absolutely miss the area. After the base closed, I was sent Barksdale AFB, La. Big difference in climate and people. I wish the base was still open. Lots of good memories.

I was wondering if you could help out with a question? I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB from May 74 to May 75 and just the other night I was with some people that came from the Marquette, MI. area. We got to talking about the base and were wondering who the Base Commander was during that time period. Was there a Commander named "Young" at anytime during the mid seventies? If you could provide, or direct me to somewhere where I could get a list of the Commanders in the seventies that would help. Please email me with any help that you could provide, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jim Meeks Email: meeksjj@msn.com

Hello! My father was an Air Force pilot, B-52, and was stationed at KISawyer. We lived on Sidewinder (222) and they were the happiest years of my childhood. I remember snow, snow and more snow! My family has pictures of our house's open front door showing packed snow blocking the entry. Also, we have a pic of the view out our kitchen window: packed snow except for several inches at the top of the window, where a dog's paws can be seen! We snowmobiled in the large open area behind our house. We went to see the ski jumps. Actually, I started skiing just outside of the base . . . got tangled up in a rope tow and never skied again! My fourth grade teacher was Mrs. Osborn. I remember walking to the elementary school singing "The hills are alive . . ." the whole way! I also remember being at school when JFK was shot. I remember air raid practices and getting underneath my desk! My mother,Lee Gilchrist, created Twice Knit Knitting during this time. My family has a picture of my older sister standing on a breakwater,in a knit bikini,at the edge of Lake Michigan in April! She literally stopped traffic. Good times, good times. It was so fun to find your website. So many good memories rekindled! Kristi

I love this web site. It brings back a lot of memories. I was stationed at KIS from Jan 1985-Dec 1992. I go back to visit about every 4-5 years. Thanks again for the site.
