I was one of three brothers who spent 5 years at KI from 1979 to 1984, Dave, Mark, and Paul Sams. We had so much fun over those five years. We lived on Panther first, then we moved to Fury when Dad was promoted. I can remember riding bikes all over that base and trying to find any hill to sled on in the winter. Although, Dead Man's Hill was probably the best hill on the base! We had a close net of friends that we lost complete contact with; Jeff P., Chad M., Thomas R., Scott R. and many more. If any of you remember the Sams' brothers, shoot us an e-mail. Great website! Brings back a lot of memories.

Stationed at K.I. 75-83 assigned to FMS R&R shop then to OMS bomber branch. Many missing co-workers such as steve downs, ross hoy,ed schmaus, bill woods, joe giambona, jim rhoades, jim cousneau, lyle ress to mention a few if any one knows there whereabouts please contact me. For all you vets that camp and return to sawyer periodically if you seen the camp spots at the base lake since they were installed I have camped there in 2004-5 &6 for $10 per-nite with water and electric hook ups and they have showers and flush toilets. Could not go last summer because the township gave the campground back to the county and they closed it until they decide what to do with it! Anyone wanting to help the cause of reopening it I urge to write the Marquette county board and voice your opinions. As any campers from the KI area know you wont find too many campgrounds around with those facilities. Time is of the essence as the person I talked to on the board said it should come up for review in feb or march 2008. To all my fellow KI vets SAC and 87th MERRY CHRISTMAS and many more NEW YEARS to remember our brotherhood together- civilians just don't quite understand the bond we all share!!

what memories! We were at KI from 1963 to 1967. I have been planning on taking my wife to the UP the summer of 2008 to show her where I grew up. I too was at Leo P. McDonald when Kennedy was shot. It is one of those memories that you will never forget where you were. A side note, dad passed away in 2001 and is intered about 100 yards from the grave of Lee harvey Oswald

A little more after reviewing the site. I lived at 400 Stratofort the whole time we were there. 4 bedrooms and a bath upstairs, family room, small kitchen and half bath downstairs. Full basement with an oil tank and oil furnace. During bad storms when the power went out you could still lite off the furnace and open all the doors. The warm/cool air circulation would keep the house livable. During the early 60s they build two ball diamonds in the open areas just north of each "Stratofort" on the base map. The eastern one quickly fell out of use but the hills on it's west side were great for sledding. We would always take this cut through the woods when going over to the shopette, gas station, youth club area. The kids in the area loved when the water tower at the end of Electra Street would overflow. Great fun to run through the falling water. As 10-13 year olds we loved to go out into the woods behind the school of Mitchell street. Lots of dirt roads to ride our bikes on, lakes to through rocks into, places to explore. As a little older kids we found the water falls. Just outside the N/E gate go down the paved road a while just past the dirt road that came down from the school of Mitchell Street. Go left, tromp through the woods awhile and you would come to a right pretty little water fall. Camped there one winter weekend with two of my friends. Deep snow and cold but we had a blast. The Bowling Ally was the place (only) to hang out at. That's where I developed my addiction to bowling ally burgers and fries. After one bad storm we looked out at the family unit just west of the Dart/Stratofort intersection. There was a snow drift the length of the building that was over the top of the front porch roofs. Everybody just walked along the front of the building and used both sides of the drift to exit and enter until spring melted the snow. They were lucky because they had a parking lot behind their unit. Ours was at the other end of the unit so every winter after a few good snows the cars were moved over and parked in the front yards so we could run out the power cords. My dad had a VW and would run a hot plate under the engine so he could start it in the morning. Ah, the good old days.
