Served at the USAF Hospital from 1976 to 1978, when I retired. Good fishing and nice summers, along with a great opportunity to further your education. This was one of my more enjoyable assignments.

I was stationed at KI from 1980 until closure in 1995 when i also retired. One of 10 left on the base at the time of closure. Many fond memories for sure. I am again putting together a reunion for anyone that served with the 87th FIS, 62nd FIS or the 56th CAMRON. Our ruenion in 2005 was for just the 87th and we had a great turnout with about 160 total people including families. We are looking to make our next one even greater and are including our close affiliates from the 62nd and 56th. The reunion date will be July 12th, 2008 so there is much time to prepare. Please contact me if you would like to be on the mailing list for this event. Hope to see you there... rick

Just wanted to make a quick note to get our email address in the guestbook as we weren't real computer saavy when I first came upon this site. Still hoping to hear from other people stationed at Sawyer from 1965 to 1969 and from 1974 to 1975. We retired in February and are making Michigan & Sawyer one of our main trips this Spring.

This was my first base assignment as a member of the 410th SPS in 1989 of which I was one of the last 100 personnel to leave the base prior to closure. As my wife is from Marquette, MI, we tend to visit each year. I have fond memeories of playing flag football, broom ball, drinking beer at the Alibi, My Place, The Shaft, the Shamrock, Eastwood, Westwood, etc. After only being on station for 6 months, 43 other members and myself deployed to Desert Shield/Storm (what an awesome opportunity to grow up). I remember it snowing in July (90 or 91) like 21 inches. It was 70 degress that day and then it dropped and to below zero and snowed. People rode their motorcycles to work and then they sat in the parking lot for almost a week until the snow melted. I remember being introduced to at the time CMSGT Duane Hackney, 2nd enlisted servicemen to receive the Air Force Cross, he was the First Sergrant. I remember taking over the armory as a young Senior Airman from a wonderful mentor, SSGT Herns. I remember the final days of my time at the base and having to select either Minot or Grand Forks as my next assignment. I also remember the joy of being one of the airman selected to do Special Duty as Presidential Security at Andrews AFB and not having to go to Minot or Grand Forks. I remember alot about KI Sawyer and every once in awhile I run into someone at the airport or in another city and say "don't I know you from somewhere?" and it often ends up being that I met them at KI Sawyer.

I lived in Gwinn until 1980, I was born and raised there, my best memories are when the B-52's were coming in for a landing, that huge plane is crashing was all I told my dad the first time I seen that, I have a lot of fond memories of K.I Sawyer AFB, and it saddened me to see it go.
