My dad was Squardron commander at KIS from 1969 - 1971. We lived on Canberra. I graduated from Gwinn HS in 1970 and attended NMU from 1970-71. My family is going to Gwinn/KIS this (2007) summer for a visit. Great website!

Thanks for preserving the memory of K. I. Sawyer. I was there from Fall of 1963 until Fall of 1965. I was in the supply unit. First, I worked at the salvage yard and then I went to BEMO (Base Equipment Management Office). I have quite a few photos of my time there; mostly photos of the ice statues which were created for a "Winter Wonderland" event. I remember pulling duty as an Air Policeman when President Kennedy was a**inated. I guarded B52 Bombers. If you like, I can scan some of my photos and send them to your site.

I was stationed at KI from 1983-1987, 1988-1992. Was assigned to the 410th SPS along with my first husband, Rick Diercks. I also worked with the private security contractor after the base was officially closed. Never thought I would see the day when I actually missed the UP and Sawyer, but looking back, I miss the place and the people. Winters were long, but once you got used to them, you figured out how to deal with it.

Nice website, hope to come back to visit the UP soon.

I was a Security Policeman 1986 to 1989. I hated the place when I was stationed there. The weather was bad snow snow snow and the drive to Marquette was to long. As I have gotten older I can appreciate the life in the UP. It was a good time when I look back on it. The guys I worked with were great guys. I hope to make it up there again some day with my daughter to show her what life was back in the day. Without the KI experience I wouldn’t be the man I am. It taught me allot about life and changes and how to be a man.

I appreciate all the History and photos that people have put together for the Memories of KI Sawyer AFB. I was stationed at KI in 1981 thru 1982 and do have some good memories of KI Sawyer.
I was with the 410 Security Police Sq. and I froze out in the weather guarding the planes for the Mission. We had 280 inches of snow that year
but we always got the job done. I was the coach for the 1982 SPS flag football team, and won the Base Championship that year. We were the SPS
"SKYCOPS" Yes, one day I would like to go back to KI, but Maybe its best I just leave it as I remembered it. A great expierence, and making lots of friends, and also being a "UPPER" Thank you KI SAWYER AFB,MI. Its was a Blast !!!

I was looking for info on a KI Sawyer vacation and found your website, and have enjoyed reading all the entries and looking at pics. I, too, am proud to say I am am AF brat, and spent 1981-1985 at 487 Invader, K.I. Sawyer AFB. My dad, Don Bintz was an F-106 pilot with 87 FIS. I went to McDonald Elem. and Gwinn Middle school and left at the end of eighth grade. We spent the winters making snow forts and sleeping in them, sledding every afternoon after school and hoping for another "snow day". I tell my kids how mom would jump off the roof into the snow drifts (we were in a one-story house), and would love it as the snow pouffed over us. The summers were spent riding our bikes all over the base, swimming in the base lake, making forts in the woods, and picking piles and piles of wonderful blueberries. I also remember the music TAPS being played and the jet engines being shut down in the evenings. This time in my life was the beginning of my love of the outdoors. I still compare all my adventures and sledding hills to those I grew up with at K.I. Sawyer. If anyone remembers me, I would love to hear from you. My best friend was Cheryl D. My first crush was Mike B. I am so excited to see the place coming back to life.

You have done a wonderful job.
I see our tours at KI have meant a lot to many people. I served at KI from '72 to '76 with a little time out for "Bullet Shot". Lived at 104 Tarzon where my son was born in '72. Worked at the 410th BW Production Analysis. Anybody remember the Chief Hurley Woodham, Charlie Aldridge, Bill Lavato, Gary Hoskins, Mike Clossen et el. Had many great times there as we all do anywhere when we're young.
They say you can't go back but I returned with my son in 2001 and just drove around and around thinking of the memories. Loved the fishing, hunting, weather and the great friends.
Thanks again for posting this website.
