I was stationed at Sawyer from August 1963 thru March of 1967 (5 winters) when I was discharged. I was with the 410th FMS as a jet engine mechanic. I was most greatful for the golf course and the chance to take college cla** from NMU both on base and at the campus in Marquette. I spent most of my time doing both activities(weather permitting on the golf of course). When I first arrived I had never experienced snow or cold weather as I was from San Diego, this was a shock I could never deal with and said once I got back to California I would never move away and 40 years later I am still here and very happy. I lived in the barracks down in the hole when I first arrived. I got married 2 years later and first lived on Ohio Street in Marquette as my wife worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital. We then moved onto the base on Commando Street. This way I could play golf everyday after work and would not have to make the long drive daily and my wife was now pregnant and not working anymore. I spent yesterday reading every post on this site while watching two football games and came away with the conclusion that everyone loved the area and the base and the dependent "kids" really loved the environment. I was glad to read this as I always felt so sorry for the "kids" being raised in such a cold and isolated area of America---I was convinced back then they could have very little enjoyment not being able to go to the beaches of California and surf. I have to be truthful, I did not like Sawyer or the area and mostly the weather but after reading all the comments I am definitely in the minority and perhaps the only one who feels this way and I can remember that while stationed there everyone complained about the place and to the point people would say it has to be the worse place to be stationed in the Air Force. Now that I am 63 years old and have been away from the area for almost 40 years the appeal begins to grow on me, I have returned once for a visit in 1993, the year I retired from the Corporate Headquarters Offices of Toyota/Lexus as the Executive Manager for Computer systems development. The base was still active then and it had changed so much for the better since I left in 1967----they had even added a swimming pool. I am grateful for the time at Sawyer to complete most of my college education and to develop my golf game----but I can never get accustomed to cold weather and the snow. I enjoyed everyone's comments and it did give me a better perspective on my 5 winters in the U.P. I plan to fly up there in June of this year to play some golf and see the area again, I will go with a whole new perspective after reading everything here.

I found your website while looking for the 307th AR Squadron..... I was stationed at KI from 1986 - 1990 and have fond memories of the people I served with and my neighbors on Blue Lake. I have lost contact with Julie Watson (pilot on KC-135A) since we have both re-married and have different last names...if you are out there, Julie, please contact me! Susan (Riordan) Gest in Avon, CT

Stationed at Sawyer from '78-'86, 410 SPS. Looking for some of the cops from that period. Great place to be and raise a family. Wish there was more work and less cold, I'd still be there.

I am originally from Gwinn. Married (later divorced) a "KI guy" in 1991. His name is Dwayne Kangas and he was in FMS (AGE). Dwayne and I were there until 1994 and then relocated to Montana (Malmstrom AFB). Both of us have been here (MT) ever since! I just wanted to say that I truly love this site. I have seen a few names that I am familiar with, so that puts a smile on my face. I have fond memories of KI Sawyer and the time in which Dwayne and I lived there. We had awesome friends and had some awesome times. Thanks for the vehicle this site provides in "remembering when."

I was there in 75 and 76. Worked for DOKM and then the 2001CS. Came there from Thailand and left there for Ann Arbor. Outstanding place to be stationed. The most amazing winters and probably the nicest AF people you'd ever run in to. The base plowed my entire yard so I could move into my house (in January)!

Great site! Sure brought back some memories from childhood. I lived there from 1970-1975 and it was great to see the pictures of the housing. I will see if my parents have some pics I can post later on.

To: DON SINK...I saw your reply back to me and did some checking myself. First of all I gave you the wrong spelling of Linda's last name. Go into the residential Dex on line, put in Stephen Lonergan in Gwinn Michigan and you'll get address and phone number. Let me know if you have any luck reaching her and if so, tell her I said "Hi" Russ and I are going up for a visit this Spring to our friends in Ishpeming so, I will no doubt try to contact Linda again. I remember you and your wife Billie, what is the update on you. We were also your neighbors on Mustang Drive but were VERY young, I was 17 and Russ was just 21 when we got married and moved there. I will be checking the site to see if you contacted Linda.
