Great site. I was at K.I. 2 times..Jun67-Sep70. Was an E-4, E-5, lived at 348 Stratofort and assigned to the Contracting Division. Met and married Marie. Was told the winters were long so I had a short romance. Married Nov '67 and will celebrate our 39th this Nov 18. Our son Eddie was born at the base hospital. Ten years passed and we went back Aug 79-Oct 81. An E-8 now, still in contracting and lived at 127 Banshee. We were back for a visit in '77 and are planning to go back and visit friends in Marquette in near future. Looking forward to playing golf again in the U P. Hope the mosquitoes have gotten smaller.

I was stationed at KI from 1980 - 1983, and worked in the CBPO. The first 6 months of my assignment in the UP was quite an adjustment, because I had always lived in the Chicago area. However, after I got used to the UP, I absolutely loved it. I met my husband several years after leaving the AF, and he has never served in the military, but he has heard so many of my cherished memories that he wishes he did! My family and I have visited the Marquette area several times. My husband and daughters really enjoy it, and for me it is always very sentimental.
Thanks for a great website!

My dad was staitioned at K.I. from 1960-1966 with the 410th AMMS. This site brought back many memories and also saddened me as to how much it has changed. I went to Leo P. McDonald elem. and remember Mrs. Haines mentioned in another post. I also remeber attending class in the basement sitting on foot lockers full of blankets and canned goods during the blackout from the "Missles of October" and walkining in the snow to and from school. I also remember the Kennedy a**ination announced and school closed. We lived at 309 skybolt after moving from Gwinn. Dad was transferred in 1966 to Beale AFB in Calif in 1966, but our time at Sawyer is much more memorable

My husband, myself, and 3 daughters were at KI from March 1979 until my husband got orders and left for Korea in August of 1981. The girls and I went to wait in Wisconsin to wait. We then went to Alaska. I guess the cold in the UP just got us ready for the cold in AK. We lived in the New Trailer Park. We still miss the good old UP and KI.

I have to say I enjoyed my stay at K.I. Sawyer when I was stationed there. I was there from '82-'85. I worked in the "Screenroom" of the ECM shop. The Buffs are a challenge to work on but I have no regrets! I met many friends during my 3 short years at the base. Hopefully I can plan a trip to the "U.P" in the near future to bring back some great memories. Thanks

I grew up in Negaunee and hung out with a few of the young enlisted guys. Ended up marrying Brian Miller, bomber mechanic, in 1993 and leaving Sawyer in 1994 to head to Offutt AFB in Nebraska. Have great memories of living on 116 Albatross Street, growing up in MI, hanging out with my "guy" friends at the dorms and Apollo Pizza! John Carter...I see you posted....remember ice skating at NMU with Tracy and I?

Great website!!! It really carried down memory lane. I was an AF brat in 1968-69. My dad didn't care too much for the SAC alerts in the bitter cold. After living 4 years in Bermuda I guess his blood got a little too thin. Anyway he volunteered for Vietnam to get out of there. I wasn't too happy about heading to Alabama but I adjusted and am living in Alabama today raising 3 boys. We lived on Mustang Drive at I belive 516? I remember the names of Chuck Pfluger, the Monroe sisters, Chuck Holcomb, Terry Hunter and Jackie Roy. Hope to see the place again in person. If not, I will continue to check back at you great website for new updates.
God Bless and Thanks Again for the wonderful website!

Wow, where do I start! This is a wonderful website. We moved to K. I. Sawyer in 1965 and lived on Ventura Avenue at the top of Voodoo Hill. I left Gwinn in 1987. K.I. Sawyer was my life. My father (Forrest) was an avionics tech and my mom (Wanna) taught at Gwinn High School for 33 years. My dad retired in '74 from Sawyer and became a social worker in Marquette. They may actually be permanantly leaving Gwinn for Tennessee in 2006.
I went to school at Sawyer Elementary, the middle school, and graduated from the Gwinn H.S. in '82, and NMU in '87. Many of your photos and memories brought back so many memories for me. I recall the old county road 553 which ran from Marquette to Gwinn past the old main gate. It was a treacherous road from the base to Gwinn in the winter. As a kid I recall passing through the main gate off of 553 and driving directly under landing B52's with the strobes going of on either side of the car... now look straight ahead at the "Big Red Bull of the 87th Fighter Interceptor Squandron!"
Rosies Pizzaria was the place on the sharp corners going into Gwinn that had a juke box, pool tables, and killer pizza burgers. Jemmas sub shop across from the high school was the best.
I remember the mini grocery store in the housing area with the quansit hut behind it that had all sorts of mechanical supplies. Then there was the base theater where in the 70's I saw "The Return of Count Yorga" for fifty cents - scared the s*** out of me. As kids we played kiddie bingo at the NCO Club on Saturdays. Our parents did Christmas shopping at the SAGE building. And then there was my favorite c***py gym - I still love the smell of it when I visit home. How about dances at the youth center and Wonder Hut? Still love replaying in my mind the jets in the air on an early Saturday morning. Yeah, I bagged groceries at the commissary in high school, too. Someone also mentioned running behind the misquito-spraying trucks as kids - dumb but great fun! I can't believe someone else remembers that! Then there were the gigantic snow blower trucks cutting back the ten foot high snow banks in the housing area. I met the love of my life at K.I. Sawyer but I let her get away. Love to hear from anyone by email!
