I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer A.F.B. Mich. from 1966-1970. I worked at the 410th FMS (AGE) in Dispatch. Ran shuttle trucks around the Maintenance Buildings and took generators, lights, heaters, ma1a's etc to the flight line for maintenance crews. I would love to hear from other FMS personnel that were there during this time. Many friends and S/SGT Raymond Walker was the best boss to work for along with others. I lived in the FMS barracks down the hill and remember the snow and the "hawk" the wind was fierce, beautiful place even in the winter.

I was stationed at Sawyer from july of 75 to march of 79. Had a great time living in the UP of Michigan, loved the snow and hiking from Copper Harbor to the Soo. Been back a few times, i was one of the four ya-hoos my good friend since Sawyer Sam Leoncello mentioned in his entry in this guestbook that reunited in 2001. I'm still at least exchanging Christmas cards with several people i met while there. The Upper Peninsula was and is a beautiful place and i will always go back to visit. Anyone out there remember the fun task of shoveling the runway lights off to keep them clear 24/7, even when it was 35 below and winds were just a howling? Lol!

Just found this site. My dad was stationed at K.I. We left in '87 when my brother graduated from Gwinn High. We too lived on fury steet. I remember that great fire moment, the deadmans hill, and all the great swimming. I used to think the winters were harsh- but now I live in the south my husband and I sure miss the snow. Thanks for the pictures. I would sure love to take my son back up there to visit-however since it is a long trip it will have to wait a little bit longer. With your photos I can still show him. Thanks

mugu stationed at K.I. from 1962 to 1964 in SAC 4042 then the 410. Met my wife (from Negaunee)while stationed there. When to Thailand in 1964 than had a break in service. Reenlisted in 1966 with assurance I would return to K.I. Served in the 62nd FIS from 1966 to 1969 first in material control and then in the training section. Both my kids were born at the hospital there, one in 1968 and one in 1970. So K.I. was a very important part of my life.Memories fade but when I saw the picture of your dad I remembered serving with him at K.I. and believe I was on the trip to Tyndall you have displayed as supply liaison. He was one of the good guys and the photo brought back good memories. Thanks

My sister was the one who found this site and I'm glad she did. I have great memories of K.I. We lived at 123 Fury. I went to McDonald while Jenny went to K.I. elementary school. I remember snowball fights and white washes. I remember recycling cans for snack money and riding our bikes to the base lake. I remember Jackie's father building an ice skating rink in her back yard. I also remember the day of the fire. This website brought back so many great memories.

I truly enjoyed this site. My family lived on base from '82-86. I attended KI Sawyer Elementary. We lived on Fury street. Lots of great memories of the base (the lake, dead man's hill in the winter, picking blueberries, remember the trucks that sprayed for mosquitos). I remember the big fire that almost hit base housing. I was a Davenport then. Would like to hear from anyone that was there from that time. Sure am sad that they closed the base. Anyway, GREAT website. Brought tears to my eyes.

My dad was stationed at KI from 1983 to 1987 (B-52 radar nav). My brother and I both attended Jr High and High School in Gwinn. We also learned how to ski at the local bunny hill right outside the base gate and at Marquette Mtn. I loved living at KI and would not trade the experience for anything the world. Thanks for a walk down memory lane.
