I was stationed there in '84-'85 in the SPS. My roomate Jeff Harvey took me back to his hometown and I was so impressed I moved there twenty years later. Some cold nights in the WSA and AAPA. I was back last year and liked that the weapons area is now a lumber mill. I snuck into the alert bomber area and raced around the trees.

My dad was stationed at KI Sawyer from 83-88 when he retired. He was MSGT Harold Bert Rickey, he worked as an air traffic controller. In those days he used to bring my up in the tower and let me talk to the B52 pilots and play monopoly with the controllers. I loved the winters and all the sledding hills near our home on Banshee. I remember the big scare when a fire got close to base. Loved the pizza at "The Jetstream". I was 12 when we left, moved to Gwinn for a few months until we moved back to Spokane WA. Never kept in touch with any of my classmates unfortunately. Maybe my name or street will remind another brat out there, send me an e-mail. Awesome sight, sad to see the base was closed. Love the memories.

how wonderful to come across your website. your pictures brought back many memories for me also. i met my husband at the nco club at KISawyer, we married in nov 81 and my first son was born at the hospital there at the base in the middle of a blizzard 29 dec 82! My husband was a AF firefighter, and we lived at 439 Packet st. K I Sawyer was by far our favorite base, and we truly miss it and the people that became family. My husband and i have thought about many times returning to see how it is now, even thought of buying perhaps our old quarters there for a summer retreat, who knows maybe one day. It was wonderful looking through your site , thank you so much it truly touched my heart of wonderful days of yore, God Bless you and yours
Sincerly Monique Farrington

K.I. was my first assignment, Jan 76 thru Jun 78, with the 2001st Comm Sqdn. Worked at the SAGE bldg in the Comm Center. I've been back at the base twice since, Aug 2004, for the O2S, and last June(2005)for the Superiorland Bike Fest(the 80 mile Road Race goes thru the base). Its sad to see the place that we grew up in such a sad state, the barracks in the hole look pretty bad. But, I will try to return every summer from now on, if just to rekindle the wonderful memories of my youth.

K.I. was my first assignment as a young Lieutenant in 1969. I was with the 410th Supply Squadron and Major Short through 1971. The Bachelor Quarters were in what is now the Red Fox Inn. We were able to stay in my wife's old apartment in the BOQ when we attended the Base Reunion in June. My wife is Beth Corbett, a Nurse at the base Hospital from 1970 to 1972. I know she helped deliver a lot of babies during her two year tour. Coached Youth Basketball while stationed at Sawyer and even took a team to the UP Winter Olympics in Menominee.

Attended the June reunion and was just stunned at how little has changed. Seemed like a beautiful time warp.

I was stationed at KI from 1961-1963 in the crash rescue-fire dept. From there to Da Nang Vietnam for a year. What a change: I got married while I was stationed there, my wife did not know where I was taking her from Indiana to the North Woods of Mich.We lived in Harvey and Marquette. Since then we have been back many times and still returning as often as we can. We happen to be there when they had the base closing ceremony a sad on for us.Made many friends on and off base.We rented from the O'neal familey on Park ST. in Marquette.Planning on getting back soon with the grandchildren. take care, thanks for the site.

Was station at KI from Jan. '78 until Aug '81.
Was in roads and grounds 410th CES.Was disappointed when I went to the reunion.Very small
showing. The people who put it on deserve a thank you for their time and effert.I have a lot of fond memories about my time spent at KI.I got to know a lot of fine people both military and civlian.I still am in contact with my last room mate from 814.I was sad to see how much the area changed.I used to fish the Escanaba river alot with MIke Mayer Refer shop.If anyone wants to drop me a line feel free.

I've been to this site a couple times and I guess it's only fair I take a few minutes to share my experiences. KI Sawyer was my first assignment out of Tech School. I was assigned to the 2001st Communications Squadron as a Base and Installation Security System Repairman. I got to Sawyer somewhere around April of 1985 and left in July of 1992. I did a Palace Chase into the Air National Guard, joining the 128th Air Refueling Wing in Milwaukee, WI as a Plans, Scheduling, and Documentation Technician. I've served since in the ANG with a few different units - 163rdARW, March ARB, CA - 150thTFW, Kirtland AFB, NM - 136thALW, Ft. Worth, TX - and finally returned to the 128thANG where I will be retiring this coming February.

I've been anxious to return to KI Sawyer to see what changes have occured since the closing in 1995. I've been living back in Milwaukee for nearly 5 4 years and have yet to find the time. I'm planning on a visit in the summer of 2006 for a few days. I'm looking forward to seeing and spending a few days in Marquette, visiting my old home in Gwinn, and seeing what's become of the base.

I really appreciate seeing the old pictures of the base and wish I had a few pictures to add. I do have one request that I'm going to throw out there and hope someone can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a subdued 2001st Communications Squadron Patch to round out my collection of patches for a shadow box. If anyone can help out, please send me an email. I'd be happy to trade if someone can help me out.

Thanks again for the sight and I'll try to take a few recent pictures when I visit next summer.
