I was a B-52 copilot that was stationed there from Sep 86 to Sep 91 in the 644th Bombardment Squadron. I left active duty in 1997 and currently serve as a full-time reservist at Robins AFB, GA. I remember the weather was quite cold for this Florida native, but the people there were always warm and friendly. I went back once in 1994 for a short TDY, but haven't been there since. I am looking forward to visiting there again (in the summer time).

Came across your site purely by chance. I grew up in Sands, and went to KI Sawyer Elementary, and Gwinn Middle and High Schools - graduated in 1993. Your site brought back a lot of great memories - thanks.

KI was my only duty station in the time I served from Jan 1973-1977. I worked at the base commissary (yes that's right...I was an Air Force grocery clerk!!) where most of the employees were civil servants. There were about 4 or 5 enlisted men who worked in the commissary. Among the names I remember best are Gary Lamphere and Robert Salade. I believe both of these men went on to long careers in the the Air Force. If anyone has any knowledge of these guys I would sure like to hear from you. I had many great friends among the civilian staff as well as my fellow airmen. There was an elderly man named Bernie Kamecki who managed the cold storage warehouse which was located directly behind the base exchange. He was quite the character and had many great stories of early life in the UP. Danny Tonkin was another great friend and commissary co-worker. Former Vietnam veteran and ex-Marine, Danny lost an eye during the war. He had a great shock routine where he would pop out his glass eye and plop it in your drink. A great ice-breaker at parties!! He was a life-long local and lived in Harvey near the prison. I'm sure the base closure was a true hardship for many civil servants in the area. As many of you will remember, KI was one of few major employers in the region. My wife Linda and I, lived off base during our tour. Mostly in Marquette at 425 N 4th Street and at 1624 Grey. Linda started and finished nursing school at Marquette General and attended NMU for this purpose. We also lived in Gwinn for a short time near the base. There was a rather beautiful river right behind hour duplex in Gwinn but the name of the river escapes me. We floated it several times with canoes we rented at the base. There was a small restaurant as you entered Gwinn that served what they called a Cudaghi (sp?) burger which was essentially a large patty of great Italian sausage topped with mozarella and mushrooms and smothered in red sauce. It was to die for and if you were man enough to finish one off, you suffered for your gluttony! Does anyone remember the name of this little diner? It was on the curve as you entered Gwinn. I have nothing but the fondest memories of our time in the UP and at KI. It's amazing to read all the guestbook entries and to see the adoration we all had for this special place. If anyone reading this might remember me or my wife Linda, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love to share memories with you! Sincerely, Greg Zenitsky Lee's Summit, MO

I was stationed at KI Sawyer from 91-95. I worked in the 410 MMS (later MS). My pals were Jack Woods, Brian Delong, Andre Oliver, Matt Hampton, Jeff Backlund, and of course, Heather Rocke. Jeffrey Mattocks was my supervisor. I hated KI at first because I had only known California and Hawaii. There wasn't even a McDonalds near by!!! The place grew on me and I miss autumn and believe it or not I miss winter. I lived in Gwinn for the fist few months with my wife, Lola, and my daughter Amanda (Born at March AFB while I was at Tech school). My son Jerry was born in the hostpital on base. Although I'm glad the cold war is over, I really think it's a shame KI is gone. I feel bad that I can't take my son to the AFB he was born at. KI was a gem hidden in the U.P., may it's spirit live on forever.

When I was stationed at K.I.Sawyer in 1974 I came home. I lived in Sands and Gwinn as a kid. My parents used to own the Zephyr gas staion and Snack Shack resturant in Sands and I went to school in the one room school house there. All my relatives on my mothers side still live in Negaunee and Ishpeming. My hangout was the Alibi Rock Theater, a disco across the street from the girls dorm at N.M.U. I taught dance there part time. I loved that place. What I miss most is the Pasties, partying at the base lake, and skiing at the chalet in Marquette. I had worked 410 OMS and 410 FMS on KC135's. Sure miss that area and plan on going back soon to visit relatives and former class mates who still live in Sands. Hell, I still got an snow machine up there at my uncles waiting for me to ride. Thanks for the memories, a great flash back!

My Father flew the Voodoo at KI when I was a kid. We lived there from around 1963 until maybe 1968. I did the kindergarten through 2nd grade there. Learned how to swim and remember the guards at the back gate. I lived on Sidewinder Street and one of my fathers best friends whom we kept in touch with was Guy Rundio. He lived across the street. I have fond memories of that era as well as KI. We later moved to Yokota Japan when my fathers squadron got stationed there. It is nice to see a place like this to leave a note...
