I was stationed with the 410 SPS from 1973-75. With recent base closure announcements in May of 2005 I wondered what was happening at KI Sawyer and found this website on Google. It was great to revisit the base through the photos and descriptions in the website. My thanks for a great site! Last fall at an Air Force Security Police Assn meeting in Louisiana I met my former boss from KI who was the Chief Cop there in the mid-70s. It was great to see each other again after almost 50 years.

I was stationed at K.I. from 80-85 in the 410th Security Police. I was assigned to "C" Flight and worked swings and midnights. I transferred in 85 back into aircraft maintenance and moved to Luke AFB and worked on F-16's. I enjoyed K.I. and was totally surprised when it closed in 95. Great fishing in that area.

I lived at KI Sawyer from December 1970 to March 1973. My then husband, Larry Mauer, was the base veterinarian. Our two sons, Jeff and Rich, were born in 1971 and 1972, at the base hospital. I have often thought of traveling back to Michigan and the UP to take a look at Sawyer for old times sake. Finding your website and seeing your pictures makes me even more determined to make the trip. I used to tease my sons when they were old enough to appreciate the tease, that I wanted to take them back to base so that they could see where they were born. When pressed as to when we might go, I alwa**uggested that we go in January or February, and they would both immediately protest that they didn't want to go when snow would be covering everything by a few feet at least. They had seen our pictures of 10 foot piles of snow in front of our home. My sons are both adults now and I would still like to travel back to Sawyer to show them where they were born and tell them some stories of the good old days. The first winter we spent there the record for snowfall was broken. The second winter we were there was the coldest on record. We did feel a bit cursed, but having come from the northeast we were somewhat prepared. During the all too brief spring/summer period, we traveled to as many of the UP sights and attractions as we could. Copper Harbor was always one of my favorites. We never thought of retiring to the area, but many of our friends and acquaintances on base planned to do just that. It would be fun to come back for a KIS reunion, though my son, Rich and I are starting a business here in Gainesville and so June this year would not be a possibility. Thank you for creating this website which I'm sure many thousand of former Sawyerites must enjoy. I certainly have and will have to look and see what pictures I still have from that time.

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer from February/March of 1962 through January 1965 in the 410th AMMS. My job was as a GAM Analyst Mechanic on the GAM-77A (AGM-28) missile. The best memories I have were working on the missiles and the B52H bombers. My worst memories were working the flightline and alert pads during the winters.

I was stationed at KI from '85 to '90 as a navigator in the 46 AREFS. I still consider that tour the best 5 years I spent in the USAF. Retired in '03 and now work at Scott AFB, IL. I'd enjoy hearing from any old tanker toads that were there during that time frame. Thanks for all your hard work putting this site together.

I was stationed at KI from April 86 to October 87. I worked in the RAPCON with the 2001st Comm Squadron. I am now a pilot for American Eagle Airlines. I fly into Sawyer about once a month. Every time I go there it is such a strange feeling. You almost think you're going to see all the hussle and bustle of the base, but it is almost a ghost town. It is a really neat experience to go back after so long.

I was at K.I. from 1988 to 1992...four of my six years of active duty. I enjoyed the fishing, hiking and of course, snowmobiling there in the area. I have many good memories of my time there.

I was born in K.I. Sawyer on August 28, 1985 at 7pm. My dad was a doctor in residency, and we moved to Burlington, WI when I was 5. I don't really remember much apart from bike rides (I was in the kiddie seat) and a long fence, and big planes. Tonight for the first time I decided randomly to see what the base is about. I knew it closed a while ago, but don't know anything about my birthplace and home for 5 years. I'll be 20 in august, and am thinking about making a road trip up there, maybe with some friends from northern MI. What can you tell me about the place? Can you still get in and look around? I'd really appreciate an email.

Just looking for former members of the K. I. Sawyer AFB community. I was team leader for the base Honor Guard for about 2 1/2 years, and very involved in the base community.
