Spent three winters at KI -- fall 1976-summer 1979. I was the 410BMW/Wing Maintenance QC Officer for a while and then the Commander, 410 FMS. Had the privilege of serving under Wing CC Col Hal Dugard, DCMs Col Al Oppel and Col Hal Beamer, and the honor of serving with the greatest group of caring maintenance guys and gals one could ever hope to serve with. I am ever grateful for the opportunity to have servied with folks like Chief George Donnell, SMSgt Bobby Mineau, SMSgt Ken Cheatham, SMSgt Ron Gutshall, and so many others. Lived at 490 Hustler a couple of doors down from then-Major Gene Habiger (bomber pilot) whom I ran into in San Antonio after he retired as General and the CC of SAC and across from Major Phil Dusing (Maintenance) and then Captain Bobby Joyal (Tanker Nav). Have looked far and wide for Linda Joyal, wife of Boby who passed away some years ago. Would appreciate hearing from anyone from KI. KI was family -- the area was cold to a South Texan like me, but the warmth of the folks made it the most memorable tour I ever served. Thank you for the opportunity of visiting this site. Well done!

Oh, K.I.! We were stationed there from '83 to '87. How I love living there! Our 7 children attended school at McDonald and Gwinn Middle school. I was the Protestant R.E. Coordinator at the Base Chapel for a few of those years. Sawyer was a very special place. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

I was on KI Sawyer from 1979 to 1982 with the 2001 Communications Squadron. I worked in the SAGE building as Radar Maint. for the RAPCON. I moved back to the area in 1998 and moved to Sawyer in 2003 where I still live today.

Many of you have commented how sad it is to drive through the base these past years. True, the base is but a hollow shell of itself from years ago, but most of the people living here are trying to make it work. It's very hard though due to so many people in the press and on the Gwinn council that want this place to die and go away. Constant bad press in the papers and tv really hurt our efforts. That is what is truly sad.

In any event, are there any others on here that were a part of the 2001st? I've always to start a website for us, but lost all of my contacts, patches, etc. in a house fire years ago. If anyone has a patch to share please let me know!
Jim

Great site. I was at KI from May 1974-1977. I was Dr Nazzaro's a**tant from 1975-1977. Prior to that I worked in the OR at the hosptial. Being from Alabama I thought I had died and gone to hell when I got to KI. After the second year I had learned to ski, fish for trout, hold a key in my mouth til it was warm enough to turn a frozen lock and say "eh by golly". What a place. I remember it fondly.

I was an air force brat stationed at KI from 1963 to 1968. My dad was SMSGT William (Bill) Maxwell Jr. We lived at 106 Savage street the last few years. Interestingly I think I can actually see the house we lived in on one of the pictures posted. We left Gwinn in April of 1968 to go to Anderson AFB on the island of Guam. I was a junior in high school at the time. I will always have fond memories of my time in the UP, hunting and fishing, playing football for the JV and Varsity Modeltowners teams and all the good friends that we made over the years.
