I was stationed at Sawyer from 68-71 getting a 6 month early out to go to school. I was a Crew Chief in the 410 OMS squadron. My most vivid memory of Sawyer is loading drag chutes into the tails of B-52's in mid winter at 3:00 am, with the wind blowing up the back of my parka. Man, it seemed like I did that alot! Later on, I was able to get a cushier job in the dock 5 bench stock area where among other things I sold coffee and hot dogs to the guys on the flight line...war is hell.

Swanzy lake, the back way into the base, on snowmobiles of course. 4X4 with Sgt ...... whatever his name was, the big red chevy. The fun off base and on. Like the time someone, no names sgt, hit the gate 2 gate on the way home?

After basic training at Lackland and tech school at Chanute AFB ,Ill,I arrived at KI Dec.67 and stayed my whole tour of duty, getting discharged Jan.71. I got a 6 month early out because I got accepted to NMU. I worked in Hangar 6 with the FMS squadron. I washed planes at first,B52's & KC135's and then worked in the Wheel & Tire shop. Great times. I visited the UP many times and I went back to the base the first time in 1996. Very strange to see it vacant. I drove around where I could. Saw my old barracks down in the hole by the chow hall & linen building. Brought back a lot of great memories. I'm going to the UP again this summer. Thanks for this website,AL

I wrote you once before, but the guestbook didn't look like this... anyway, I was the last AF person to live at 113 Savage (your old house). I used to take my yooper scoop and pile the snow up next to the garage so my kids could go out their bedroom window onto the garage roof, then slide off the garage roof onto my snow pile then down the drive into the cul-de-sac and go roundy-round it. The winters were hard, but you learned how to make it. I was the Vehicle Operations Superintendent with 410th Transportation, and got the job of closing down the mobility barn and everything inside it when we shut the base down. When I PCS'ed there were just four vehicle operators left to drive forklifts and trucks and tractor-trailers to finish the closure process. There were less than 50 people left on base. It was sad to see. It was extra tough on us because they closed the BX and Commissary right after base closure was announced, so we had to go to Marquette for everything. If the base had stayed open I would have loved to have stayed up in the UP - the peace, beauty and lack of crime up there were golden. Sawyer really was "Someplace Special".

Have enjoyed going thru all 40 pages of the guestbook. I was looking for anyone who perhaps worked in the CBPO in 1973. Found a couple names who may fit that description, Don Curlee page 14, and Bill LaRock Page 29. I arrived at KI in Feb 73 from VietNam. It was NOT where I wanted to go by any stretch of the imagination but ... Anyway my recollections are: lots of snow, Tombstone pizzas in the NCO Club, midnight chow at mess hall --- about 30 cents or so, Crocodile Rock (Elton John) was a very popular song then, and snow in June. I worked in PSM Section (Personnel Systems Management) as a brand new TSGT. SMS Bath was my supervisor and I recall working along side a TSG Reagan (Ron I think). We worked in the SAGE building and seems like everything was in that building. I went to the NCO Academy at Barksdale AFB La while stationed at KI and after that went to Recruiting School. I left KI in Sep 73. Spent very little time there but it was interesting to say the least. This is a great website and I wish there was something similar at other bases I have been assigned (Grissom AFB Ind 1965-1971; Hickam 62-65; recruiting duty Charlotte NC area 73-82 except for stint at Rectg Hqs Shaw AFB last 2 years of my career). Thanks again!

My dad was stationed at K.I. from Dec 68 until his retirement Jan 1, 1970. I was in 9th grade in the spring of 70 and began the 10th grade during the fall of 69, prior to our departure on Jan 1, 70.

Great time at K.I.

Thanks for the memories!
Bill

I lived there in 90-91 my Dad was Mike Zucaro (Zero) He was a Fire Fighter. If anyone remembers please email me taker420316@comcast.net It was a great place and good people. I remember going to the American Legion that was near by, with my parents. I remember they had a down stairs for the kids to hang out while the adults were upstairs drinking of playing bingo. I also remember "dead mans hill" that was on the base. The House I lived in had a playground behind it. If anyone here remembers me or my father please email me. My mom was Lorna Zucaro. If anyone remembers her.
