I am looking for people who knew my father, Ssgt. Tracy Schafer. He was stationed at K.I. from 78 to 93. He worked at the 410 CES Bug Shop. I was born at the base hospital in 82 and when my dad got stationed in Texas due to the base closing, I was 11. I still remember K.I. like it was yesterday. We lived on Packet St. for awhile till my dad got remarried, then we lived on Hercules St. till we moved. If anybody knew my dad, feel free to send me an email.

I was at K.I. from 86 to 90. I was a maintenance officer and remember a few of the names in the guestbook. I never lived on base but had quite a few military friends from the Family Tavern and softball with Brown's Tavern. I credit the time at Sawyer for my decision to stay in the USAF and retire. I haven't run into many people from the UP but, did re-enlist Nick Dollar at Eglin AFB a few years later, had a crew member form the 0040 incident in a class at Ft. Belvoir, and ran into Willie Santiago and wife at Eglin. So to Nick, Al and June at the Tavern, the group of crew chiefs (Carr, Hornback, etc,) that signed the guestbook, Terry Henke, Rick Gardner, Tom Finkle, Steve Lemieux, Bill Patterson, Big Joe Klamfoth, Pete Pelissaro, Steve Klicka, Jim West, Ed Handley, Gary, Stu Bradley, Dave Vandenburg, Rick Keidle, Chief Johnson, etc. I have reason to remember you. Thanks.

I see you were there in 1963 and I left in April 1964. I was with the Ground Power Shop 56th CAMERON.I first saw the place in August 1959 and even then I thought I had just arrived in heavan. It was so unspoiled. I have been back to the area 2 or 3 times and plan to goback this year and see the new museum. Even with the cold winters I loved the place. Bill

I recently revisited KI for the first time in 25 years and was saddened to find the former base in disrepair. I intended to stay at the Red Fox Inn upon arrival but it didn't quite live up to the expectations created by its website, so I stayed at a small hotel in Gwinn. Most of the KI housing area now looks like a huge low income neighborhood with some units qualifying as slums. I was also surprised to find the surrounding area has experienced marginal economic or physical growth... Gwinn is the same size and Marquette has only slightly expanded westward on US 41. Like most everyone else, I have fond memories of the time I spent at KI but there's now absolutely nothing about the area that could compel me to want to live there again.
